Physical Education at Tibshelf Infant and Nursery School

Daily physical activity is an essential part of the school curriculum for all of our children. After school sports clubs give additonal opportunities for all children to engage with being active, develop healthy lifestyles, and make exercise a part of their daily life. This year sports clubs include gymnastics, football, karate, dance and T'ai Chi. Links with sporting clubs are well established and children's achievements with sporting activiites out of school are celebrated in school. These include swimming, horse riding, golf, ice skating, ski-ing and darts. Staff members have had training to ensure physical activities are planned to be inclusive, and meet the wide range of need and ability across school and nursery. Active learning is the key to quality learning - our children are engaged and happy learners who understand the importance of exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle.

In the Foundation Stage children have access to learning indoors and outside as part of the daily curriculum. Equipment encourages physical activity and developes climbing, balancing, and jumping skills. Wide ranging activities in their own play areas, in the garden area and on the main playground are carefully planned to develop and challenge every child's confidence and skills, and give opportunities to enjoy baing physically active.

In Key Stage 1 the wide range of climbing and balancing equipment encourages children to be physically active during playtimes and lunchtimes. Children have access to bikes and trikes, a fun fit trolley, basketball, football and table cricket, several tyre parks, an artifical grass area, and a garden area. During playtimes and lunchtimes, and before and after school children are actively encouraged to complete seventeen laps of the playground which equates to a mile - the daily mile!

In Key Stage 1 and Foundation Stage 2 all children have an hour of quality physical education. This is led by our P.E. co-ordinator who ensures high quality active learning opportunitiies in dance, gymnastics and games.

In Key Stage 1 all children have an additonal hour of planned afternoon activity sessions. This year this had included cricket coaching, boccia, yoga, dance and T'ai Chi.
